ISYS111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Wide Area Network, Transaction Processing System, Electronic Portfolio
ISYS111 – Fundamentals of Business Information Systems
Week 1 Workshop
Objectives:
1. Explain the benefits of being an informed user of information systems
2. Describe a computer-based information system and its components
3. Explain the major types of computer-based information systems and how they
support different types of workers including managers and non-managerial workers
4. Discuss the impact of IT in organisations and the society
5. Have the practical skills to create an e-portfolio on Mahara
Objective 2:
Information Technology:
• IT relates to any computer-based tool that people use to work with information, to
support the information and information processing needs of an organisation.
• Examples include:
- Computers
- Software
- Network structure
- Fax machines
- Phone systems
- Data analysis tools
- Wide area network
- Security systems
- Cameras
- Smart locks
Information systems:
• Interrelated components working together to collect, process, store and disseminate
information to support decision making, coordination and control in an organisation
• An information system is made up of 5 components:
- Hardware
- Software
- Data
- People
- Process
• Hardware:
- Physical components of technology
- Can be touched
• Software:
- A set of instructions that tells hardware what to do
- Cannot be touched
• Data:
- A collection of facts
• People:
- From the uses to front-line help-desk workers, to systems analysts and
programmers all the way up to the chief information officer (CIO)
- An essential element to an IS that must not be overlooked.

Document Summary
It relates to any computer-based tool that people use to work with information, to support the information and information processing needs of an organisation: examples include: Interrelated components working together to collect, process, store and disseminate information to support decision making, coordination and control in an organisation: an information system is made up of 5 components: A set of instructions that tells hardware what to do. From the uses to front-line help-desk workers, to systems analysts and programmers all the way up to the chief information officer (cio) An essential element to an is that must not be overlooked: process: A series of steps taken to achieve a desired outcome or goal. Types of information systems: functional area is. Supports the activities within a specific functional area. System for processing payroll: transaction processing system. E. g. target or coles checkout point-of-sale terminal: office automation system. Supports daily work activities of individuals and groups.
