2. Describe different ways in that organisations make use of Business Intelligence
3. Give examples of how businesses and government agencies can use different
Business Intelligence to analyse and display data
4. Explain how CPM can help businesses manage performance
Managers and decision making:
• Management
- Is a process by which an organisation achieves its goals through the use of
resources
- Recourses = people, money, materials and information (inputs)
- Achieving goals of the organisation is the output process
- The success of a manager can be determined by: Inputs: Outputs
• Decisions
- A choice among two or more alternatives made by individuals and groups
- Diverse in nature and made continuously
- Decision making is a systematic process
Why managers need IT support:
• The number of alternatives to be considered increase constantly
• Decisions must be made under time pressure
• Decisions are becoming more complex
• Decision makers can be situated in different locations, as can the information they
need
• Important information technologies available for managers
- In addition to discovery, communication and collaboration tools that provide
indirect support to decision making, several other technologies have been
successfully used to support decision making
- These technologies are known as Business Intelligence (BI)
Business Intelligence:
• A broad category of applications, technologies and processes for gathering, storing,
accessing and analysing data to help business users make better decisions
• Business Intelligence software vendors examples:
- SAS
- Business Objects
- Information Builders
- SPSS
• Small Organisations
- Excel spreadsheets
• Large organisations
- Data mining/predictive analytics
- Dashboard
- Data Visualisation
