Week one - fundamentals of business information systems. It relates to any computer-based tool that people use to work with information to support the information and information processing needs of an organisation. Computers: software, network structure, firewalls, fax machines, phone systems, hard disk farms wide area network, security systems. Information systems are interrelated components working together to collect, process, store, and disseminate information to support decision making, coordination and control in an organization. Information systems are made up of five components: hardware, software, data, people, process. What is an information systems (is)? first three components: Techology: hardware physical components of technology (such as computers, keyboards, printersetc that you can touch), software is a set of instructions that tells hardware what to do it cannot be touched. : what happens when you switch on your laptop/computer: data is a collection of facts. : your street address, city you live in, no of students in a class, your mark for assignment 1.
