Death-insulated generation the first generation to be removed from death as a natural part of the life process. Most do not experience death in family till after 21 (consequence of extended life) Used to be: at home, natural cycle of life. Today: most common in elderly, chronic, degenerative diseases, lengthy period of dying phase, 80% in hospitals & nursing homes, medical advances to prevent and delay death, preparation of body in funeral home, funeral/burial/cremation often. Trend toward hospital death reversing home death begin to reemerge: increasing patient autonomy, hospice movement, unnatural prolongation of life. More required care by caregiver elders more debilitated and frail. Thanatology: study of death with life within. Developmental task view death is final life task accepting inevitable death and preparing for it. Individuals view based on beliefs, values, upbringing, cultural background constitute need more research cause based on how should cope and accomplish: views death only at old age.
