Roughly 2/3 or people over 65 live with other members of the family, mostly spouses. Moving in with children represents an adjustment to a multigenerational setting that can be jarring- may feel uncomfortable with how children are raising their grandchildren. Continuing-care community: around 10% of adults- environment where all residents are retirement age or older. Assisted living: independent housing supported by medical providers to the extent required. Adult day-care facilities- elderly individuals receive care only during the day, but spend nights and weekends in their own homes. Skilled-nursing facilities- full time nursing care for people who have chronic illnesses or are recovering from a temporary medical condition. Institutionalism- psychological state in which people develop apathy, indifference, and a lack of caring about themselves. 10% of people age 65 and older live in poverty, 6% live in near poverty. Of elderly women living alone live below the poverty line. 8% of whites, 19% hispanics and 24% african americans.
