Document Summary

Polyatomic ion = a unit of two or more atoms that bears a net electrical charge. Can be treated as a unit, since the atoms stay exactly the same in many chemical reactions. Molecular formula = the kinds of atoms combined to make one molecule are indicated by element symbols, and the number of each kind of atom is indicated by a subscript. Ex: h2o indicates that there are 3 atoms in the molecule (2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen atoms) Structural formula = shows exactly how atoms are connected by chemical bonds. Chemical bond = an attractive force between two atoms holding them together in a molecule. Condensed formula = a way to show how the atoms are grouped together in the molecule. Binary molecular compound = consists of molecules that contain atoms of only two. Hydrogen has a binary compound with every nonmetal except the noble gases. Ex: hcl (hydrogen chloride), hi (hydrogen iodide)
