SOC 001 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Gender Inequality, Glass Ceiling, Social Forces
Document Summary
Gender role - expectations regarding the proper behavior, attitudes, and activities of males or females. Social norms reinforce and legitimize patterns of male dominance. Homophobia - fear of and prejudice against homosexuality - contributes to gender-role socialization (gay=feminine, lesbian=masculine) Women"s roles - be beautiful, submissive, helpless, and be a wife/mother. Masculinity proving to be disadvantageous in the service industry bc many men are unwilling to portray the sensitive qualities needed. Multiple masculinities - men can okay a variety of gender roles, including a nurturing- caring role and an effeminate-gay role, in addition to their traditional gender role of dominating women (although this is still the main one) Different societies have different versions of gender roles, but in general still have men dominant and women submissive. Instrumentality - an emphasis on tasks, a focus on more distant goals, and a concern for the external relationship between one"s family and other social institutions.
