Cytoskeleton: network of fibers extending throughout the cytoplasm. Function: support the cell and maintain its shape. Can be dismantled and reformed to change the shape of the cell. Cell motility: interaction of the cytoskeleton with motor proteins. 3 main fibers that make of the cytoskeleton: microtubules: thickest. Serve as tracks alone which organelles equipped with motor proteins can move. Centrioles are found within the centrosome which help organize microtubule assembly in animal cells. Responsible for beating of the flagella and cilia. Anchored in the cell by a basal body. Bending involved large motor proteins called dyneis: microfilaments: thinnest, solid rods. Build from molecules of actin, a globular protein. Thousands of actin filaments made of a protein called myosin interact to cause contraction of muscle cells. Cytoplasmic streaming: circular flow of cytoplasm within cells. Protects the plant cell, maintains its shape, prevents excessive uptake of water. A young plant cell first begins with a thin and flexible wall: primary cell wall.
