Document Summary

Basic atomic structure: atoms are composed of. Electrons- negatively charged particles: protons & neutrons are located in nucleus, electrons are found in orbitals surrounding the nucleus. Elements: atomic number- number of protons, atoms with the same atomic number. Belong to same elements: big 4 elements. First shell can only hold 2 electrons. Second shell can only hold up to 8 electrons. Third shell can only hold 8 electrons. Sodium and chlorine will bond because sodium only has 1 electron in the outermost shell and chlorine is 1 short. Covalent bonds: electrons are not always shared equally, an atom in a molecule w/ high electronegativity. Holds electrons more tightly-has partial negative charge. The other atom will have partial positive charge. Differences in electronegativity dictate how electrons are distributed in covalent bonds: nonpolar covalent bonds- electrons are evenly shared between two atoms (symmetrical, polar covalent bonds- electrons are shared unequally (asymmetrically)
