Document Summary

An overview of the physical states of matter. Gases form a solution in any proportions. Pressure: the force exerted per unit of surface area. Barometer is used to measure atmospheric pressure. Manometers are used to measure pressure in an experiment. 1 newton = 1 kg * m/s2 (unit of force) Physical behavior of a sample of gas can be described completely by four variables. Any one of them can be determined by measuring the other three. Exhibit linear relationships between volume, pressure, temperature, and moles. Boyle"s law: at constant temperature, the volume occupied by a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to the applied (external) pressure. Charles"s law: at constant pressure, the volume occupied by a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional to its absolute (kelvin) temperature. Avogadro"s law: at fixed temperature and pressure, equal volumes of any ideal gas contain equal moles of particles. Density of a gas is directly proportional to its molar mass.
