Document Summary

Chapter 5 gases and the kinetic-molecular theory. 5. 1 an overview of the physical states of matter. Most substances can exist as a solid, a liquid, or a gas under appropriate conditions of pressure and temperature. A gas adopts the container shape and fills it, because its particles are far apart and move randomly. A liquid adopts the container shape to the extent of its volume, because its particles are close together but free to move around each other. A solid has a fixed shape regardless of the container shape, because its particles are close together and held rigidly in place. Gas volume changes significantly with pressure: when a sample of gas is confined to a container of variable volume, increasing the force on the piston decreases the gas volume. Gas volume changes significantly with temperature: when a sample of gas is heated, it expands; when it is cooled, it shrinks.
