A company assesses its technology needs by benchmarking, or comparing, the technologies it employs with those of both competitors and noncompetitors. New technologies can be acquired through acquisition and other means, or developed internally. People play many roles in managing technology such as chief information officer, entrepreneur, technical innovator, product champion, and executive champion. Innovative organizations establish cultures that support creativity and intrapreneurship. Successful development project share characteristics like building on core capabilities, having a guiding vision of what needs to be achieved, and having a committed team.
