Communication-the creation and use of symbol systems that convey information and meaning. When we are doing something that involves art we are trying to connect it with something or someone: culture is a process that delivers the values of society through products or other meaning making forms. Mass media- the cultural industries-channels of communication-that produce and distribute songs, novels, tv shows, newspapers, movies and other cultural products to large numbers of people. Convergence- newer forms of technology disrupt and modify older forms in different eras. Mass communication- the process of designing cultural messages and stories and delivering them to large and diverse audiences through media channels as old and distinctive as the printed book and as new and converged as the internet. Premodern period- 1000 bce to mid-fifteenth century which involved the transition from oral communication to the emergence of the alphabet and the written word.
