Document Summary

Edward o wilson: natural selection favors primate behaviors that enhance survival and reproduction. Competition and sexual dimorphism - more competition for females correlated to increase in sexual dimorphism ( difference in size or appearance between sexes of an animal) Ex: gibbons vs apes: gibbons don"t compete so less size variance, apes: get bigger & more aggressive to successfully compete. Sexual selection: the frequency of traits that change due to those trait"s attractiveness to members of the opposite sexx. Primary strategy for males: physically compete for access to females = strong degree of natural selection in males for large bodies and large canines. Killing of infant by foreign male that has driven one male from multifemale group. Female stops lactating and sexually receptive to him; new male enhances reproductive fitness. Dominance: the ability to intimidate or defeat another individual in a pairwise or dyadic encounter. Dominance hierarchy: represents how individuals in a primate society are ranked relative to one another.
