ANTH 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Catarrhini, Thumb, Body Plan
Document Summary
Arboreal adaptation: traits that enable an organism to live in trees. Dietary plasticity: an organism"s ability in adapting to a given environment. Parental investment: the time and energy parents expend for their offspring"s benefit. Power grip: a fistlike grip in which the fingers and thumbs wrap around an object in opposite directions. Precision grip: a precise grip in which the tips of the fingers and thumbs come together, enabling fine manipulation. Primates have all of the above traits. Primates evolved from nocturnal to diurnal (being awake at night vs. during the day) Primates also have rhinarium naked surface around the nostrils. Primates are evolving to have a reduced number of teeth. Cusps on a primate"s teeth depend on what they eat. Tooth comb: anterior teeth that have been tilted forward. Primates have fewer offspring but invest a lot of time and energy into their children. Grades: group of organisms sharing the same complexity and level of evolution.
