GEOG 3 Chapter 9: Chapter 9 Notes
Document Summary
The large-scale pattern of currents within the world ocean is called the world ocean circulation. Traditionally, ocean circulation has been divided into two components, the surface circulation and the deep circulation. Dynamical physi- cal oceanography describes the ocean using physical laws and conservation equations in concert with a variety of atmospheric and oceanographic observations. Franklin published one of the rst detailed maps of the gulf stream around 1769. Rumford"s hypothesis was consistent with his discovery of convection cur- rents, the rising and sinking of hot and cold water parcels in a liq- uid. John young buchanan (1844 1925), a chemist and physicist aboard the challenger, published in 1885 some of the rst maps depicting the distribution of salinity at different depths and latitudes in the atlantic ocean. N 1958, henry hank stommel (1920 1992) proposed one of the rst global models of abyssal circulation (figure 9-2).
