Samples: sediment, salinity, temperature, water density, agonizing work: 269 deserted. Fridtjof nansen: fram boat(123 ft schooner) trapped in arctic ice and drifted for 4 years. Trieste expedition 1960: voyage to the deepest place in ocean. Alvin 1964: 3 people, whoi, 4400 divers. Can penetrate liquid outer core but bent in transit. Travel faster as they went down into the earth. Inner structure of earth: crust, mantle, outer+inner core. Earth"s layer is classified by layer composition.
