• Encoding and retrieval
o Encoding
• The process of acquiring information and transferring it into LTM
o Retrieval
• Transferring information from LTM into working memory
• Encoding
o Types of rehearsal
• Maintenance rehearsal
▪ Rehearsing information and saying it over and over
▪ Results in poor memory
• Elaborative rehearsal
▪ Find a way to relate information to something meaningful
▪ Typically results in better memory
o Levels of processing theory
• Memory depends on the depth of processing that an item receives
• Slow processing
▪ Involves little attention to meaning, or paying attention to physical
features of a word
• Deep processing
▪ Close attention, focusing on item's meaning and relating it to
something else
▪ Results in better memory than shallow processing
• Craik & Tulving
▪ Presented words to subjects and asked them three different types
of questions
• A question about physical features of the word
• A question about rhyming
• A fill in the blank question (must see if word "Car" fits into the
sentence "he saw a ___ on the street")
▪ Given memory test
• Physical features worst, then rhyming, then fill in the blank as
best
• Problems
▪ Difficult to define exactly what depth of processing is
▪ Need to define depth of processing that is independent of the
memory test (doesn't exist)
o Forming visual images
