Document Summary
Avery welch medical cytogenetics prelim 1 chapter 5 cell harvest: amniotic fluid failure. Should not exceed 1 in 100 consecutive samples (1%) If there are more than 1 in 100 consecutive failures it would indicate a pattern. Late gestational age (20+ weeks) create bigger pellets, but mostly full of dead (unviable) cells. Early amniocentesis (10-12 weeks) is usually not a cause. Not as much fluid, but usually enough cells. Draw an ml of fluid for each week of pregnancy. Type of media can influence number of epithelioid cells but it"s usually luck of the draw. Fibroblasts produce the best metaphases in an amnio. Bright red means recent bleeding into amniotic cavity. Rbcs may not allow amniocytes to attach to the growth surface. May not be any viable cells in sample. May represent fetal death or threatened miscarriage. Documentation of sample condition (applies specifically to amnios, but can be applied to all samples as well)
