Avery welch ah 3121 immunology week 10 chapter 10 notes 11/3/15 & 11/5/15: epstein-barr virus. Associated with burkitt"s lymphoma (cancer of b lymphocytes) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and b-cell lymphoproliferative disease. High incidence in west africa, papua new guinea, southern china, greenland (inuit) Infected b cells proliferate and produce more virus. Results in stimulation and proliferation of ebv-specific t cells. Ebv specific cd8+ cells kill some of the viruses infected b cells. Remaining infected b cells are transformed into cancer cells. B cell proliferative disease: human papilloma virus (hpv) Viral proteins bind to tp53 and rb1 (retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene) Viral infected epithelial cells proliferate due to misregulation caused by viral proteins. First proven virus-cancer association: human t-cell leukemia virus type 1 (htlv-1) High incidence in japan (kyushu) and west indies: human immunodeficiency virus (hiv-1) and human herpes virus 8 (hhv8) High incidence in central africa: other chronic viral infections cause tissue damage. Damage results in high rate of cell renewal.
