Document Summary

Multinucleate cell formation and/or intranuclear inclusions give cells distinct appearance. Saliva, urine, blood, semen, and cervical secretions. Urine of newborn is full of cytomegalovirus - must be disposed of virus ef ciently or it could infect other newborns in the hospital. Initial infection asymptomatic -> local lymphoid tissue -> lymph nodes and spleen (via circulating lymphocytes and monocytes) Virus localizes in epithelial cells in salivary glands (saliva), kidney (urine), cervix (secretions), and testes (semen) Symptoms may disappear but the virus will continue to shed. Speci c ab and cmi response activated but not entirely clear virus. Infected cells remain in body for life and can be source of reactivation if cmi impaired. Interferes with transport of mhc-1 molecules to cell surface. Induces expression of fc receptors on cell surface. Antibodies are protecting it rather than tracking down macrophages. 2nd common cause of mental retardation in babies. 955 of adults in the us (35-40 years) infected.
