Document Summary

T cell tolerance or activation: self-ag induce tolerance while foreign ag induce activation, self-antigens. Long-lived antigens (t cells see them their whole lives); may induce anergy or apoptosis: foreign antigens. Only in peripheral lymphoid organs (lymph nodes) Antigen destroyed by immune response, therefore is short lived. B cell tolerance: self-polysaccharides, lipids, and nucleic acids are not recognized by t cells, to prevent auto-antibody production, they must induce b cell tolerance. Central b cell tolerance: some b cells strongly recognize self ag in the bone marrow resulting in. Helps them to not have such a reaction to self, and maybe survive. Strong recognition of self-antigen occurs in bone marrow. New light chain combines with previous ig heavy chain. Results in the production of a new ig not specific for self-antigen. Foreign antigen: tolerance can also be acquired against foreign antigen, both t and b cells become unresponsive to foreign antigen.
