Induction of peripheral tolerance: mature t cells recognize self ag in peripheral tissues too strongly. Self-reactive cells are suppressed by t regulatory cells. If they just bind to self-ag, nothing really happens. Signal 1 foreign antigen presented w/ mhc molecule; binds. Signal 2 costimulators expressed on apcs in response to microbes (ie. b7) Because they have the right receptor to go after the microbe: anergic response.
