Oral: if not met through sucking from breast or bottle, individual may develop thumb sucking, fingernail biting, overeating, or smoking. Trust vs mistrust: warm, responsive care trust/confidence that the world is good; mistrust due to neglect or harsh handling. Anal: toilet train before children are ready or make too few demands, conflicts about anal control may appear in the form of extreme orderliness or disorder. Autonomy vs shame & doubt: parents foster autonomy by permitting reasonable free choice and not forcing or shaming child. Phallic: oedipus conflict for boys and electra conflict for girls (sexual desire for opposite sex parent); avoid punishment by giving up desire and adopt characteristics and values of same sex parent to form superego; feel guilty when violating standards. Initiative vs guilt: make believe play gain insight to self initiative develops when parents support child"s sense of purpose; demand too much self control.
