A syndrome marked by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, regulation, behavior, maladaptive behaviors: interferes with day to day life. Patterns of thoughts, feelings, or actions that are distressful, deviant, dysfunctional. Distress & dysfunction: must be severe to interfere with one"s daily life, well being. Creates verbal shorthand for referring to a list of associated symptoms. Allows us to statistically study similar cases, learning to predict outcomes. Physicians use detailed diagnostic criteria and codes to guide treatment. Used to classify disorders and label people. Easier to count cases of autism spectrum disorder if we have a clear definition. Behavior that is personally distressing & dysfunctional, and/or so culturally deviant. Deviant: when something is different from what would be expected in a culture. Other people may judge it to be inappropriate. Maladaptive, interfere with normal day to day life. Depends on personal values of diagnostician, cultural expectations, how harmful it is.
