Chapter 10 intimate abuse of people with disabilities & the elderly. Little attention has been given to intimate abuse of people with disabilities. Often not included in research or asked about ipv with other things. Empirical evidence suggests that people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to intimate abuse. Defining intimate abuse of people with disabilities. Estimates of intimate abuse of people with disabilities. Estimates of rates of abuse of people with disabilities vary tremendously. Both men & women with disabilities at higher risk for ipv, particularly physical abuse, than men & women without disabilities. Have only been a few studies that use large, population-based samples to examine problem of ipv against people with disabilities -> show smaller differences in risk between people with & without disabilities. Rates vary by type of abuse & by characteristics of victims. Women with physical & mental disabilities had higher rates of ipv than women without. Depends on source of statistics & the definitions employed.
