Document Summary

Cytosol: semifluid jellylike substance in which subcellular components are suspended. Chromosomes: gene carriers in the form of dna. Eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells differ in the location of their dna. In a eukaryotic cell, most of the dna is in an organelle called the nucleus, which is bounded by a double membrane. In a prokaryotic cell, the dna is concentrated in a region that isn"t membrane-enclosed called the nucleoid. Nucleus: contains most of the genes in the eukaryotic cell; control center of the cell; has three parts nuclear envelope, nucleolus, and chromatin. Nuclear envelope: double membrane enclosing the nucleus, separating its contents from the cytoplasm; perforated by pores; continuous with er. Nucleolus: nonmembranous structure involved in production of ribosomes; a nucleus has one or more nuclei; nondividing nucleus. Chromosomes: discrete units of dna that carry the genetic information; one long dna molecule associated with many proteins. Chromatin: complex of dna and proteins making up chromosomes.
