Document Summary

Course: bio sci 93: matter consists of chemical elements in pure form and in combinations called compounds, an element"s properties depend on the structure of its atoms. Atom is the smallest unit having the properties of an element. Atoms are composed of smaller parts: subatomic particles[neutrons, protons+ (neutrons and protons are packed tightly in a dense core: atomic nucleus), electrons-(from a cloud of negative charge)] The mass of protons/neutrons is 1 dalton=1 amu(atomic mass unit)=1. 7*10- Atomic number: the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Mass number: the sum of protons + neutron. Atomic mass: the total mass of an atom. Radioactive isotope: the nucleus decays spontaneously, giving off particles and energy. When the decay leads to a change in the number of protons, it transforms the atom to an atom of a different element. Radiometric dating half-life of the isotope[not affected by temperature, Periodic table of the elements inert=chemically inactive.
