CH 231 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Dihedral Angle, Unsaturated Hydrocarbon, Alkane

43 views7 pages

Document Summary

Line-angle formula- an abbreviated way to draw structural formulas in which vertices and line endings represent carbons: alkanes have the general molecular formula cnh2n+2. If there is one substituent, number the parent chain from the end that gives the substituent the lower number. If there are two or more different substituents, list them in alphabetical order and number the chain from the end that gives the lower number to the substituent encountered first. Substituents are named following this same set of rules. Infix- a modifying element inserted into a word. Indicates the nature of the carbon-carbon bonds in the parent chain. Yn- = one or more triple bonds: suffix- indicates the class of compound to which the substance belongs. If there is only one substituent on the cycloalkane ring, there is no need to give it a number. If there are two substituents, number the ring by beginning with the substituent of lower alphabetical order.
