The three of them failed to attain the status and respect they craved. Also lacked crucial buffers a sense of personal identity and a like-minded group of peers who valued them for it. Belonging to cliques and clubs diminished the need to perform and provides insulation against teasing, bullying, or negative status comparisons from the larger group. During early adolescence, youths have not yet developed a firmly established sense of their personal identity and hence tend to see themselves through the lenses of their peers. When michael was publicly labeled as gay, he worried a lot that he might actually be homosexual, even if he had never experienced sexual feelings for other boys or men. Mitchell was obsessed with winning compliments to validate his persona. For mitchell and michael, lacking an internal way to rebuff their insecurities, the shootings provided a very public way to demonstrate to themselves and others that they were who they wanted to be.
