Institutional or Structural Approaches to Gender
Gendered Organizations
o Second wave of feminist movement in Anglo-European society –
claim that gender is an integral part of societal institutions and
structures
o Macrostructural approach to gender – shifts the focus from
individuals or interaction to social aggregates
• Social aggregates are composed of individuals, but they
become more than the sum of the individuals within them
• Assumes that gender is more than individual traits or
interaction between those individuals
• Gender works top-down from organizations down to the
level of individuals and interactions
o A gendered organization is oe i hih adatage ad
disadvantage, exploitation and control, action and emotion,
meaning and identity, are patterned through and in terms of a
distitio etee ale ad feale, asulie ad feiie
o Organizations produce gender through 5 interrelated processes
• Create divisions along gender lines whether in physical
location, power, or behaviors (gym locker room)
• Construct symbols or images that can support or oppose
those divisions (posters in gym)
• Produce types of interactions that reinforce these divisions
and inequality (interactions between men & women in
weight room)
