screens would have been unheard of in the early days of Hollywood
Sexualization of women seems to begin at increasingly younger ages
The midriff is a young woman who intentionally uses her sexuality as a
means of empowerment
Midriff represents one way of working through some of the emerging
contradictions regarding gender and sexuality in the wake of the second

Previously, women could be perceived as exchanging sex and
emotional support for financial support in the context of marriage
As women gained economic independence in the workplace, a
new space was provided for experimenting with ideas about

sexuality, and developing a sense of sexual agency therefore
seems consistent with those goals
Midriff and other examples of the increasing sexuality of young women
and girls are a source of alarm for many because of the assumed
connection between these images and the behaviors of real girls and
young women
Rising rates of teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually
transmitted diseases are considered to be consequences of this
youthful exploration of sexuality as empowerment
Media power perspective girls and young women uncritically
absorb the messages about sexuality portrayed in the media and
reflect these messages in their own behavior; the media
environment that depicts young women and girls as sexual agents
creates added pressure on women and girls to engage in sexual
activity before they may be ready and without negotiating power
to demand safe sexual practices
