The small intestine receives not only chime from the stomach but also secretions from the liver and pancreas, which enter the digestive track near the junction of the stomach and small intestine. The liver is the body"s largest gland which secretes bile a liquid that helps digestion. It has 4 lobes a large right lobe and smaller left lobe. The right and left are separated by the falciform ligament. On the back side the caudate lobe is right next to the vena cava the upper half. The quadrate lobe is the lower love right next to the gallbladder. The back side lobes are separated by the porta heptais. Porta hepatis- point of entry for the hepatic portal vein, proper hepatic artery, and a point of exit for bile passages. The liver is filled with hepatic lobules cells with a central vein surrounded by cuboidal cells called hepatocytes. Each plate of hepatocytes is an epithelium 1-2 cells thick.
