Document Summary

Duodenum: first short part of the small intestine. Secretions from the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas enter through duodenal papilla. Pancreas: head is nestled in the curve of the duodenum. Pancreatic duct joins with common bile duct (from gallbladder and liver) to empty into the duodenum via the duodenal papilla. Sodium bicarbonate (neutralizes stomach acid), water, and digestive enzymes that break down starches, fats, and proteins. Secrete insulin and glucagon (hormones) into the blood stream. Liver: largest gland in the body (weighs about 3 pounds) Right and left lobes are separated by the falciform ligament. Nutrient rich blood from the gi tract is brought to the liver via the portal vein (enters liver through porta hepatis) Cleans the blood and absorbs and stores nutrients from it. Produces bile: helps with digestion, removes waste from the liver. Absorption of nutrients and cleaning of blood occurs inside lobule. Hepatic triad: hepatic vein, artery, and bile ductule.
