Ways to measure variables: self-report, observational, physiological measures. More about conceptual and operational variables: operationalization- the process of turning a concept of interest into a measured or manipulated variable, a variable can be expressed in 2 ways. Conceptual variable (construct)- the researcher"s definition of the variable in question at an abstract level. Operational variable- the researcher"s definition of the variable represents their specific decision about how to measure or manipulate the conceptual variable: operationalizing happiness . To study the variable happiness the researcher began by developing a conceptual definition. Conceptual definition: subjective well-being (well-being from a person"s own perspective. Operational definition: chose to operationalize subjective well-being, by asking people to report on their own happiness with their life in a questionnaire format. Participants also should use their own criteria to define what a good life is. Operationally defined happiness by asking people to respond to five items about their life satisfaction using a 7-point scale: operationalizing other conceptual variables.
