All variables can be expressed as either conceptual variables (researcher"s de nition of the variable at a theoretical level) and operational de nitions (researcher"s speci c decision about how to measure or manipulate the conceptual variable) Diener happiness has lots of meanings but he thought of it as subjective well-being. He did one measure but there are other ways to measure, e. g. using the ladder of life to measure well-being; everyone nds a di erent measure to be good for them. Start by stating a de nition of the construct (conceptual variable) and make an operational de nition (many ways to do it for each conceptual variable) E. g. to measure association between wealth and happiness, have to measure both and operationally de ne wealth (e. g. salary in dollars, kind of car driven) Religiosity e. g. how often you go to church.
