Africa: northern tip of africa cut off from rest by sahara desert, bantu farmers were from west, settled in east and south, kicking other african civilizations out. Were connected through dispersed interconnected communities which europeans couldn"t figure out: as world industrialized, trade routes not enough, needed raw materials. Africa had materials: 1800"s africa carved into colonies by treaty of berlin 1884. India: began on indus river, first sanitary system for water+sewage, hinduism brought from invaders and mixed with islam and buddhism. Boundaries of cultures fluid/open ie silk road connected roman empire with chinese. Polynesians: seafarers, culture spread throughout pacific, end of first millennium had navigated thousands of miles and found tahiti, hawaii and easter island, 1300s settled in new zealand.
