Political socialization: the process by which individual acquire their political values and outlooks. Parents and friends; many people absorb the political attitudes of their parents and caregivers. Gender has a major effect on political views. Religion shapes public opinion on major value questions. Party preference has become an even stronger predictor of individual opinions. Some experts believe that the economic self-interest matters most. People with more money will vote for lower taxes. A series of study suggests that people also look to political elites: individuals who control significant wealth, status, power, and consequently have significant influence over public debates. When elites shape members of the public"s views on issues, they are trying to frame the issue-give the issue a particular slant. War inspire a strong sense of we"re all in this together , a nationalist sentiment. Most dramatic events have a similar, if smaller, effect on public opinion.
