Document Summary

Biology 101, chapter 2: the chemical context of life. Matter- anything that takes up space or has mass. Element- substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. Compound- two or more different elements combined at a fixed ratio. Elements of life: essential elements are elements that an organism needs in order to survive (oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, trace elements- required by organisms, but not in large quantities. Some elements are needed by all forms of life, but others are only required by certain species: some elements are toxic, but some species can adapt. Atom- smallest unit of matter, still retains properties of an element; composed of subatomic particles: neutrons, protons, and electrons: neutrons and protons are located in the atomic nucleus, electrons form a cloud around the nucleus. Electrons are found in different electron shells. Valence electrons are outer electrons and the outermost electron shell is the valence shell: mass is described in daltons, or atomic mass unit.
