BIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Radiometric Dating, Electronegativity, Unified Atomic Mass Unit
Document Summary
Evolution-process of change that has transformed life on earth. Life involves-evolutionary adaptation, regulation, reproduction, response & environment, growth & development, energy processing. Different levels of life forms (cells to ecosystems) Biosphere, ecosystem, communities, populations, organisms, organ/organ system, tissues, cells, organelles. Enclosed by membrane that regulates passage of materials. Each chromosome has 1 long dna molecule w 100s or 1000s of genes. Genes encode info for building molecule (units of inheritance) Energy flow through ecosystem as light & exits as heat. Ecosystem level-organisms interact (could be harmful or beneficial) Cell level- smooth operation due to interaction btwn components. Species range from 10 million to over 100 million. Unity in life-dna is universal genetic language for all organisms and unity is evident in many features of cell structure. His 2 points- species show evidence of descent w modification & natural selection is the reason for it. Theory is broader in scope than hypothesis, general, supported by evidence.
