Document Summary

The stomach stores food and breaks it down with acid and enzymes. Secretes a digestive enzyme called gastric juice. Made up of a protein-digesting enzyme, mucus, and strong acid. Break apart the cells in food and denature proteins. The interior surface of the stomach wall is highly folded and is dotted with pits leading to tubular gastric glands. 3 types of cells that secrete different components of gastric juice. Secrete mucus, which lubricates and protects the cells lining the stomach. Secrete hydrogen and chloride ions, which combine in lumen (cavity) of the stomach to form hydrochloric acid (hcl) Secrete pepsinogen, an inactive form of the enzyme pepsin. How pepsin is formed (positive feedback: pepsinogen and hcl are secreted into the lumen of the stomach, the hcl converts some pepsinogen to pepsin, pepsin itself then helps activate more pepsinogen, starting a chain reaction.
