Chapter outline: ways of the world, chapter 19. In 1853: 430 million chinese citizens, there was no industrial revolution and agricultural revolution. China could not keep up with the western world. Huge peasant population, unemployment, impoverishment, misery and starvation was very high. State was unable to effectively perform many functions such as tax, ood control and social welfare due to corruption. Gave rise to bandit gang and rebellion opposing to qing dynasty which let to taiping uprising. Xiuquan (1814-1864) proclaimed that he himself was younger brother of jesus. Taiping of cials promised women and men equal share of land, also allowing women to take civil service examination. Taiping forces lacked communication with other leaders of rebel group. Qing dynasty loyalist crushed peasant rebellion which lead to severe economic depression and 30 million lives were lost. In 1830s, british and americans found enormous pro table market from opium. Chinese authorities recognized that this was a problem.
