GEOSC 010 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Lava Tube, Volcanic Arc, Deccan Traps
Document Summary
Viscosity - refers to the measure of the amount of fluid that is resistant to any type of flow. Volatiles - these are gaseous components of magma that are dissolved in the melt. Eruption columns - these are buoyant plumes of hot gases, laden with ash, than can literally go thousand of meters up into the atmosphere of the earth. Pahoehoe - this term refers to a flow of lava that has a smooth to ropy surface. Lava tube - this is a tunnel that is within lava that has been hardened. It acts as a horizontal conduit for lava the flows from a volcanic vent. Lava tubes actually allow the fluid from lavas to travel great distances.
