Ivan was supposed to be called up before alyosha but because of his illness he had to be pushed back in the lineup. Alyosha jumps up when ivan walks in and exclaims: "ah!" Ivan doesn"t really give much help, to all of the judge"s questions he responds very blandly. Like he "didn"t care" about any of it. Ivan leaves but then decides to walk back . He puts the money (the 3000) that smerdyakov gave him on the stand and asserts that smerdyakov was the murderer. He just feels so guilty it consumes him. He wants to blame smerdyakov to the court even though he knows he is to blame. Katerina suddenly goes into a fit of hysterics. She screams that it was dmitri who killed fyodor and pulls out his damning letter as proof. Katya"s love for dmitri was not like love but more like revenge.
