Ivan questions why smerdyakov is accusing him of killing his father. Smerdyakov tells ivan that the act of wanting his father dead was enough to kill him. Smerdyakov says that ivan wanted dmitri to kill his father so that he could get double the inheritance. Katerina says that if smerdyakov really did kill fyodor then she is equally responsible because she put him up to it. Katerina shows ivan the letter from dmitri that basically says he will kill his father to get the 3000 back to katerina.
