During the second half of the 19th century, there was a full fledged cultural renaissance in the region, asking how the middle east and northern africa had came to be dominated by the great powers. Newspapers were introduced, allowing arabic intellectuals to disseminate political thoughts and theorys -- people were questioning everything. Sparked arab nationalism in the ottoman empire -- main thinkers said that arab society wouldn"t be able to evolve until it threw off. Rethink islamic practice and doctrines in the context of the changing political, technological and economic climate of the middle east. Thought that muslims had strayed from the true essence of islam, and had caused muslim society to decline. Thought that this has happened b/c people in the past had seen.
