The Color of Choice: White Supremacy and Reproductive Justice by Loretta J. Ross
The Color of Violence Chapter 5
Women of color activists want a form of reproductive justice that requires protection of
women’s human rights to achieve the physical, mental, spiritual, political, economic and
social well-being of all women and girls.
Population control ideologies can be found in our reproductive policies, immigration
policies, and incarceration policies.
White supremacy definition: Interlocking system of racism, patriarchy, homophobia,
ultra-nationalism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and religious fundamentalism.
What Americans think as a society in regards to women of color and population control is
dependent on their relationship to white supremacy. Conservatives and liberals enforce
reproductive hierarchies that unfairly target women of color.
All national population policies put women’s empowerment at risk no matter how much
of a historical tradition they are.
Even when the law, church, or partners oppose women’s reproductive decisions, they still
make the decision for themselves.
Who gets target for positive pro reproduction policies versus policies that discourage
childbirth is determined by powerful elites based on race, class, sexual identity and
immigration status.
Women of color face many obstacles to having children such as forced contraception,
sterilization abused, and welfare family caps.
Many radical and moderate conservatives in the US directly link social ills with the
fertility of women of color. This is based on the view that people are not born into
poverty but rather end up in poverty because of individual choices. Their solution is to
get rid of poor people rather than getting rid of poverty.
Even environmentalists point the finger at the fertility of poor women in the global south
as the cause of environmental degradation rather than Americans overconsumption and
Military Industrial Complex.
The pro-choice movement is largely obviously to the role of white supremacy in
restricting options for all women and ignores these intersections.
Reproductive politics are the struggles over who decides “whether, when and which
woman can reproductive legitimately and also the struggles over which women have the
right to be mothers of the children they bear.”
Women of color have to take on both the right and the left when demanding control of
their bodies.
A change needs to be made on the individual, community, institutional, and societal
levels to end all forms of oppression, including forces that take away self-determination
and control, and limit reproductive choices.
