Describe the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of attitudes and give an example of each. Discuss the factors that influence whether attitude- consistent behavior will occur: attitude: tendency to think, feel, or act positively or negatively toward objects in the environment, three components. Behavioral = way you act toward the object. Attitude formation: nature or nurture: social learning (modeling by parents, classical and operant conditioning, mere exposure effect. All else being equal, the more you experience an object the more positive your attitude toward it. Describe cognitive dissonance theory and discuss the research supporting the theory. Subjects brought in, put through horrible boring spool-sorting and knob turning task. People found it more fun and exciting request, so students had to create another justification. They changed their attitudes toward the task to bring it into line with their behavior. People tend to change attitudes to decrease dissonance, not their behavior. Define and give examples of stereotypes, prejudice, and social discrimination: stereotypes.
