Inequality is a significant determinant of human behavior. Disparities in life chances are so extreme that in some places, the poorest of the poor may not be aware of them. Three forces discussed here are particularly responsible for the domination of the world market- place by a few nations: the legacy of colonialism, the advent of multinational corporations, and modernization. Colonialism: occurs when a foreign power maintains political, social, economic, and cultural domination over a people for an extended period; it is ruled by outsiders.
