Document Summary

5: sociology chapter 10: racial and ethnic. Ethnic groups: the term is human beings that are set aside from others primarily because of its national origin or distinctive cultural pattern, ex: jewish, christians, puerto ricans. Minority groups are overwhelmingly represented in the subordinate group: five basic properties of minority groups. Race: racial groups refer to minorities who are set apart from others by obvious physical differences. Primary reason why hate crimes occur (and ethnocentrism), but not limited too. Discrimination: the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice of other arbitrary reasons, actions that are different from other groups, unequal treatment towards groups, institutional discrimination. Refers to having a government agency discriminate against the people. Sociological perspective: functionalist- it serves positive functions for those who practice discrimination, conflict- the racial prejudice and discrimination have many harmful consequences for society. A tool to use against social change.
